Is 3 kW the right size for your home?
Size the inverter to the load you want to run at the same time, not to the number of panels. Add up the running watts of everything that will be on together during a power cut — fans, lights, fridge, TV, Wi-Fi, a water pump — and keep that total below about 80% of the inverter rating. For a 3 kW inverter that means roughly 2,400 W of simultaneous load. If you want to run an air conditioner on battery backup, or your simultaneous load regularly crosses 2.4 kW, move up to a 5 kW model.
24 V or 48 V at 3 kW?
Most 3 kW hybrid inverters in India run on a 24 V battery bank: two 12 V tubular batteries in series, or one 24 V lithium battery. That keeps the battery cost low. A 48 V design draws half the current for the same power, which means thinner cables and lower losses, but it needs four 12 V batteries or a 48 V lithium pack. At 3 kW, 24 V is the sensible default. Choose 48 V only if you already own a 48 V lithium bank or plan to grow to 5–6 kW.
The IP rating decides how long it lasts
An inverter’s IP rating tells you how well its enclosure keeps out dust and water. This is the specification most buyers skip, and it is the one that decides whether a unit survives five monsoons on an outside wall.
- IP21 — protection against vertically dripping water only. Indoors: a dry utility room or inside a cabinet.
- IP54 — dust-protected and protected against water splashing from any direction. A verandah, a staircase landing or a covered wall.
- IP65 — dust-tight and protected against water jets. A fully exposed outside wall or a dusty site.
